Council of the European Union

The COEU

In the heart of Europe, where national ministers from each EU country meet to negotiate and adopt EU laws, is the Council of the European Union (COEU). Established in 1967, the COEU is one of the seven European Union (EU) institutions and works in tandem with the European Parliament to carry out legislative and budgetary functions for peace and prosperity. Bringing together the ministers of 27 Member States of the EU, the COEU treasures economic and political cooperation between these nations, strengthening bonds that form the largest trading bloc in the world. Coupled with dynamic updates, this Council will surely keep everyone on their toes. Ministers, the decision of the Council depends on you, one that determines the fate of Europe.

Climate Action in the EU

In this era of an ever-changing geopolitical landscape, the issue of climate change has long been at the back of everyone's mind. Yet, the evergreen topic of climate change has become increasingly relevant and urgent. Following the conclusion of the Conference of Parties 28 last year that signalled the "beginning of the end" for the fossil fuel era, it is clear that more action can be taken to safeguard our future. However, with the fast-expanding economy and volatile environment that shape the world today, whether the EU can meet its ambitious green objectives for 2030 is unpredictable. In this Council, one must balance economic growth and sustainability, while striving for collective actions to achieve a decarbonised economy. Despite a seemingly cliché topic, there lies beneath unforeseen agendas that can jeopardise the Council's progress at times. While Ministers can look forward to fast-paced discussions when tackling the issue of circular economy, they are to be cautious of circular debates! Ultimately, time is of the essence in the fight against climate change.
